Here We Go Again!

Remember all those promises the Libs were making during the last election about not going after our guns again? They lied. Regardless whether you are a liberal or not, I know that doesn't really surprise you now does it? ALL Liberals are liars.

Remember the old useless assault weapon ban that did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to reduce crime? Remember how they whined and cried when their pet violation of the constitution was allowed to whither and die on the vine? Well they're trying to resurrect it on steroids. The
Free Republic has the full text of the new bill. Here is a full list of every explicitly banned weapon:

As if that weren't bad enough, get this, ANY semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine is banned if it has ANY of the following features:

They don't stop there either. Any semiautomatic pistol that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine becomes illegal if it has any of the following features:

  • a second pistol grip (which is already regulated, see my rant here)
  • a threaded barrel
  • a barrel shroud
  • the capacity to accept a detachable magazine at a location outside of the pistol grip
  • a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds

Not wanting to leave any stone unturned, the following makes a semiautomatic shotgun illegal:

  • a folding or telescoping stock
  • a pistol grip
  • the ability to accept any detachable magazine
  • a fixed magazine capacity of more than 5 rounds
  • a revolving cylinder

For those who are not weapon savvy; when it mentions semiautomatic it does not mean we're talking about a machinegun. A machinegun is called "full automatic". Which means if you squeeze the trigger and hold it, it will fire bullets until it runs out of bullets or you release the trigger. Semiautomatic on the other hand means that you have to squeeze the trigger once for each bullet that gets fired, but the gun loads the next round for you.

Now to add insult to injury, read the text and see if you can find any language that amounts to a grandfather clause. What's a grandfather clause you ask? A grandfather clause says that any of these items owned prior to the enactment of the law are exempted. In other words, because there isn't a grandfather clause, if you own any of these guns the day this law takes effect you will be a criminal subject to 10 years in federal prison.

Do you recall all the feigned indignation the libs were throwing around about the Patriot Act infringing on our constitutional rights? One could have perhaps taken them somewhat seriously if it weren't for their abysmal record of infringing on this constitutional right. Either you support all the rights or you're just being a hypocrite. In short, they lied about being concerned about infringement on our rights. They were simply trying to inflame the masses just to deliver the reins of power back into their greedy hands and if you believed them, you were stupid enough to buy into their lie.

So you don't own any guns and you're wondering why you should care, here's a quote from Paul Harvey that expresses the situation succinctly:

In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control.
- From 1929 to 1953, approximately 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control.
- From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938.
- From 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935.
- From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964.
- From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970.
- From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956.
- From 1975 to 1977, one million "educated" people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

That places total victims who lost their lives because of gun control at approximately 56 million in the last century.

Since we should learn from the mistakes of history, the next time someone talks in favor of gun control, find out which group of citizens they wish to have exterminated.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed, a program costing the government more than $500 million dollars.
- The results Australia-wide; Homicides are up 3.2%, assaults are up 8%, and Armed robberies are up 44%. In that country's state of Victoria, homicides with firearms are up 300%.

Over the previous 25 years, figures show a steady decrease in armed robberies and Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain how no improvement in "safety" has been observed after such monumental effort and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns."

It's time to state it plainly; Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws only affect the law-abiding citizens.

In other words, if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns! Please contact your senators and representatives now to voice you opposition to this attempt to erode our civil rights!

Castle Doctrine

Governor Rick Perry of Texas signed a law today that allows a person to defend themselves with deadly force if threatened with mortal danger. Imagine that, it will be legal to act in self-defense once this law takes effect in September. How in the hell did it ever become illegal to defend yourself? The current law of the land requires a person to make a verifiable attempt to retreat before employing force in self-defense. Imagine honest people who've done nothing wrong other than being the victim of a crime are expected to maintain the presence of mind in the midst of a terror filled situation to ensure that they leave evidence that they attempted to flee before they may protect themselves. What kind of ignorant bullshit is that? That law was obviously written by someone who values the lives of criminals far more than they do the lives of innocent citizens. Luckily that insanity has come to an end with Rick Perry's signature this afternoon. The Brady bunch are obviously beside themselves, screaming that it will lead to people abusing the law to commit murder. All I can say is, I hope they find themselves in a similar situation some day, perhaps then they'll finally understand.

A Few Reviews

I figured I would write a post reviewing the items I tested out at the range this weekend.

To begin with I fired my newly modified PLR-16. The optional hand-gaurd functioned very well, but I still found myself grasping the front of the magazine well out of habit. The muzzle brake on the other hand did not function as I had hoped. Don't get me wrong, it certainly reduced muzzle rise and recoil noticeably. The thing that made it unacceptable was the other things it did... It directed the muzzle gasses back into my face with sufficient force to actually cause my hair to flutter! As if that wasn't enough, it also directed a large portion of the gun's considerable noise back at me as well. A neighboring shooter even stopped by remarking "Wow! That thing's just downright violent!" So I unscrewed it and went back to firing it without a muzzle brake. I have no doubts that this particular muzzle brake would work fine on a rifle, but this gun is just too short for it.

While picking up ammunition at a local gun shop, I happened across some interesting polymer cased .223 rounds. They were inexpensive so I grabbed a few boxes and decided to try them out.

I did a little online research and found stories indicating that these rounds have an issue with the neck separating when fired in AR rifles. I didn't have that issue in the PLR, presumably because of the shorter barrel or perhaps Natec has eliminated that problem. These rounds fed well and shot accurately. If the manufacturer has indeed addressed the reported issues with neck separation, then these rounds should be considered for our military's use. The reduction in weight of a magazine loaded with these rounds was immediately noticeable. Ask anyone that's ever humped ammo and I'm sure they will unanimously agree that lighter ammo is a good thing.

Moving on along... The 1911 fired quite accurately, but fed for shit. I sort of thought that might be the case because I had noticed already that the feed ramp was just about as far from being polished as it could be. So when the slide came forward to strip a round from the magazine, the nose of the bullet was driven into the rough feed ramp and the whole mechanism came to a grinding halt. Once I got home, I pulled out the Dremel, buffing wheels and emery stick and spent a couple of hours polishing up the feed ramp. It looked as if the feed ramp had been ground into the frame with a 60 grit sanding drum, so polishing out the feed ramp took quite a bit of effort. The feed ramp now shines like a mirror and rounds feed like a charm.

The SKS functioned flawlessly. I would even say its one if the better SKS's I've fired. So that one was a score. I guess it's worth while pawing through the crate of cosmoline covered rifles looking for the one with the sharpest rifling. I seem to have a knack for picking SKS's. Then again I've owned probably two dozen of them at one time or another all told. This should make an excellent rifle for the wife to operate.
Here you see my plans for the front end of this rifle. The grenade launcher will be trimmed off and the barrel re-crowned. The grenade sight will be removed and the bayonet mounting lug will be ground off. I'll mount a nice red dot sight on the rear sight leaf and then the action will be loaded into a new stock like this one available from CombatStocks.com:

A Little Hipocrasy Perhaps?

New Orleans is by all measures a very liberal city. Everyone knows that the official liberal policy regarding icky guns is that no one should be allowed to own one and that self-defense is not a right; a person should have to rely on the police to save them from criminals. Then let their city be over-run with criminals and violent crime and what do they do? Buy guns like they're going out of style, that's what! Gun sales in New Orleans have increased by about 38% since huricane Katrina. Issuance of concealed carry permits is also way up. I'm a little torn over this. On the one hand I want to cry foul and ask these libs why they aren't relying on the police to save them. On the other hand, I hope that this will help educate some liberals about the reasons behind the second amendment and perhaps reduce their party's ignorant insistance on removing these constitutional rights. Unfortunately I don't have much hope in that regard. History has proven that liberals in general believe that laws should punish everyone but them.

A Traitor in Our Midst

Federal judge, Holly Fitzsimmons from Bridgeport Connecticut refused bail for Hassan Abujihaad who's been accused of passing classified information to al Quaeda in hopes of enabling attacks on US Navy warships. Abujihaad, formerly known as Paul Hall prior to his conversion to islam served in the US Navy aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold in 2000 and 2001.

If this guy is indeed found guilty of these charges I hope the federal court has the courage to levy they type of punishment that traitors deserve! Throw the book at him! I'm sorry if you don't agree with me, but there are very few lower crimes in my eyes than betraying your brothers in arms.

My PLR is Finished

Well I've finally gotten all of the parts in to finish assembling my PLR-16 in the configuration that I wanted to get it into (mostly). Here are a few pictures:

I've attached the Kel-Tec standard front hand grip. This has allowed me to relocate the laser designator to the picatinny rail molded into the bottom of the hand grip. Initially I was concerned that perhaps the hand grip would be too loose to serve as a stable base for the laser designator. After it arrived and was attached however, I was rather pleased to see that it is indeed quite rigid once it's in place. After installing the designator in its new location, I bore sighted it with the laser bore sighter. I then smacked, tugged, pulled, pushed and otherwise abused the hand grip in an attempt to alter the designator's alignment... All to no avail. No matter how hard I tried, the hand grip remained stable and the bore sight setting remained unchanged.

In addition to the front hand grip, I've also added a stylish anodized aluminum compensator that I picked up from Veriforce Tactical in Phoenix Arizona for $19.99 (note: shipping was only $.10!). The PLR-16 barrel is threaded to accept standard AR-15 flash suppressors and muzzle brakes (½" x 28TPI). Installation was a simple matter. I simply unscrewed the stock thread protector and twisted the new muzzle brake on with a little high temperature loctite. I did however use a very small amount of the loctite because I was debating purchasing one of these 5½" muzzle brakes just to see what in might look like on this gun. Anybody have any opinions?

Now it's time for me to engage in a little rant. There was one more accessory that I wanted to mount on this gun to make it just right... A vertical fore-grip. Unfortunately, after consulting experts, I've been told that adding a vertical fore-grip to this gun would be a federal crime! You have got to be kidding me! So I took a vertical fore-grip I had laying around and set it against the gun to give you all an idea of how cool this would have looked. Let me reiterate what I just said for those with reading comprehension problems. The fore-grip IS NOT ATTACHED, merely set adjacent to the forearm of the pistol for the purpose of snapping a picture.

Attaching a vertical fore-grip to a pistol turns it into a NFA-regulated Class III, "Any Other Weapon". How in the hell does attaching a purely aesthetic appliance to a firearm make it any more dangerous than it already is? These ignorant sons of bitches banning guns simply because they are scary looking are going to make my fucking head burst! Logic just is not their strong suit!

With that out of my system, let me address some of the e-mails I've gotten in regards to my posts about this gun.

First, no, this is not a machinegun nor is it one of your dreaded assault rifles. Just because a gun looks scary does not mean that it is an evil machinegun or an even an evil assault rifle. It does not fire full-auto, only semi-auto, Further, it is a pistol and not a rifle.

Second, let me respond to the question "why do you need such a thing?" with a few questions of my own... Why do you need an expensive car? Why do you need a jet ski? Why do you need high-end graphite golf clubs. The answer is the same in all four cases. You don't need them, but you garner enjoyment from having them and one of our ineanlienable rights in this country is the pursuit of happiness. On another note, you are far more likely to be killed by a car (expensive or otherwise) than you are by a gun of any kind and I don't see too many people clamoring for cars to be banned.

Lastly let me respond to the question "What would you use that thing for?" I'd use it for target shooting and home defense.

I have yet to test fire the gun in its new configuration. That will be accomplished this weekend. I have a rather full bill of items to test out this weekend.

I picked up a Yugo 59/66 SKS at the last local gun show. I've finally managed to divest the thing of all of the gooped on cosmoline, so it's time for a test firing. Eventually it will be stripped down, reconfigured with the requisite compliance parts and fitted with a new stock for my wife to use.

The other item I'm going to try out is this:

This may look like a run-of-the-mill M1911 pistol, but it does have some very interesting features. First off if you look at the slide, you'll see the inscription "Remington-Rand Inc. Syracuse, NY, U.S.A.", but if you look at the frame, you'll see "Interarms Silver Cup". What this means is that this is pretty much a parts pistol... However all of the parts of this pistol except the frame and the plastic hand guard slab on the side facing the camera all appear to be original 1940's vintage military parts. The fit on all the parts is extremely tight (no wobbling) and the action and trigger are very smooth. The rifling in the barrel is sharp. I managed to talk the pawn shop owner into a sale price of two bills, so how could I go wrong? The history behind these particular pistols is interesting. My research indicates that Interarms found a bunch of original WWII era 1911's caked in cosmoline and stowed in crates in England a few years back. The guns were sold to England during WWII to equip British troops for the invasion of Normandy. When Interarms tried to import them, the BATF of course would not allow them to without first demilling them (oxyacetylene torching the frames). (Again more gun grabbing ignorance!!! Destroying historical relics!) So Interarms imported the remaining pieces and assembled them on new frames. My research indicates that these guns can be pretty much hit or miss in terms of quality, but nothing I've seen in regards to this pistol seems dodgy, so we'll see how she behaves at the range this weekend. At the very worst, I've picked up a low-price tuner 1911.

My New Kel-Tec PLR-16

It's about time for me to sit down and write a little bit about my new toy; the KelTec PLR-16. Let me just start off by saying this is one wickedly cool gun! I had anxiously anticipated its arrival for some time and already had a few items that I wanted to slap on to it once it arrived. I took the beastie out on the range, loaded up a stock GI magazine full of the dirt cheap Wolf 5.56mm ammo and levelled it at the target some 25 yards away using the gun's stock open sights and slowly squeezed off my first round. A pure clap of Thor's thunder erupted. The report from this thing was loud enough that 6 other shooters at the range actually laid their firearms down to come over and see what sort of artillery I was loosing down range. I really can not exaggerate how loud the report is from this gun. It is quite impressive.

The result down range from this first furtive encounter was equally impressive. My target had sprouted a hole just slightly down from and to the left of the very center of the target, but still less than ½ inch of the mark. I grinned and lobbed a few more down range. The recoil was surprisingly light even though I was firing a rifle cartridge from a pistol. By the time I had fired 10 rounds, the center of the target was so beaten that you could not identify the individual bullet strikes. So I hit the switch and brought the target back for a bandage job before sending it down to the 50 yard line. I fired the other 10 rounds out of the magazine and found the grouping still quite tight sitting at just about three fourths of an inch (firing rested).

So having experienced the normal sights that come with this thing, I dug into my range bag and fished out a red dot site, a laser sight and my laser boresighter I ran a fresh target down to the 50 yard line. I adjusted the red dot until it's dot was indistinguishable from the boresighter's dot. I then adjusted the laser sight's dot until it merged with the boresighter's dot. I removed the boresighter and slapped a fresh magazine in the magazine well, jerked the charging handle and tapped off a few rounds. Surprisingly, the rounds slapped into the target directly under the laser sight's red dot without any further fidgeting. I switched off the laser and fired three rounds sighting through the red dot. Two clicks in windage and three in elevation later, I was beating the hell out of the center of the target. At this point I was starting to gain one hell of a lot of respect for the accuracy of this gun. Keep in mind, I was using el-cheapo Wolf ammo here! At this point I have to sort of spend a little time telling you about the sights that I've mounted on this gun.

The red dot I'm using is BSA's bottom of the line $30 red dot sight that I picked up on a lark from Walmart. This sight does have some limitations. Firstly it has a 5 MOA (Minute of Angle) dot. Which means that the illuminated area of the dot will cover a circle five inches in diameter when pointed at a target 100 yards away. This means that the red dot was covering a two and a half inch diameter circle on my target sitting down at the 50 yard line. The other limitation is that the sight does not magnify the shooter's view of the target at all. This is however by design. Not magnifying the view means that the shooter can see more of the scene before them, allowing them to rapidly acquire and deliver fire on targets. I must however say that this sight is completely adequate and functional. More expensive red dot sights might offer features like magnification, multiple reticles and lower MOA dots, but I guess it's all a question of diminishing returns. A 2 power sight with a 3 MOA dot can easily cost several hundred dollars. My only complaint about this sight is that the lens covers are not attached and therefore easily lost and they also fit rather loosely making that eventuality far more likely.

Now moving on to the laser sight. This was a REAL score! The laser sight is a "Famous Maker" laser sight that I ordered online from J&G sales for get this, $29! the laser sight kit came with a number of optional parts and pieces. It includes a push on, push off switch, a coil corded pressure switch, A picatinny rail mount and a figure "8" mounting adapter that you see being used in these pictures. The PLR-16 has a 1" diameter piece at the breech end of the barrel that the barrel is screwed into. I mounted the figure "8" piece there, canted off to the one side. Now laser sights are actually pretty simple devices and there aren't many options to go with here. Basically you can get different colors and different power levels. The cheapest lasers are the red lasers with green being more expensive and blue being the most expensive. One can also find some infrared lasers the dot from which can only be seen through night vision equipment. Now, some inexpensive laser sights are made from cheesy materials like plastic. This laser sight is actually housed in aluminum. The reason for wanting a laser with a higher power level is so that you can see the dot it projects at longer distances and under brighter ambient light conditions. This laser was clearly visible on the target at the 100 yard mark of the indoor range I was shooting at. This laser setup really is a deal! It's functional and rugged and certainly worth every penny of that $29!

So getting back to the PLR-16... There are still a few optional bits that haven't arrived yet. Still on order is the optional front handguard. This will cover the barrel and gas tube and present a comfortable place to grasp the front of the gun. It also has a picatinny rail molded into the bottom of it. This will become the final home for my el-cheapo Famous Maker laser sight.

The other optional bit that is yet to arrive is a snazzy AR15 muzzle brake. The end of the PLR-16's barrel is threaded to accept any standard AR15 muzzle brake or flash suppressor. The addition of this muzzle brake should suppress the PLR-16's rather modest muzzle rise.

So returning to my range report... I had heard tales of the PLR-16's legendary accuracy, So I had squirreled a 3-9x adjustable rifle scope with a set of rings into my range bag (for lack of a more suitable alternative). I swapped my red dot out for this scope and zeroed it in. After getting that perfected, I dropped a magazine of NATO M855 ball ammo into the magazine well and directed my attention at a fresh target run all the way down to the 100 yard line of the range. Firing from a rested position I was easily putting down 1" - 1½" groups on paper. It was however kind of interesting trying to fire this thing with a rifle scope sitting on top of it with no stock to rest your cheek on.

Disassembly of the gun was somewhat less than intuitive, but a quick read of the instruction manual later had it quickly and completely disassembled. It wasn't that the process was difficult, just that it was not immediately intuitive. Doing it once though should be enough to have you zipping through the process the next time. Just be careful there are two small pins that will be easy to misplace if you're not careful. Cleaning the gun was a snap with the exception of one thing. Anyone that's cleaned an AR15 family gun knows that the breech is a serious pain in the ass. Well this gun uses an AR15 breech. Compounding the problem is the fact that there is no straight line access to the breech because of the shape of the receiver. So it took some inventiveness and contortions to swab out the breech. On the other hand, this thing uses a gas piston quite unlike an AR15 which means that this gun's guts weren't bathed in carbon like an AR15's would be. So I guess in the end it was a trade-off.

During my trip to the range I am happy to report not a single misfeed or misfire after running 150 rounds through it. This thing's hungry chamber happily scarfed down any type of ammunition that I threw its way and happily delivered the projectile accurately on target. So this thing is certainly not a finicky eater.

So in conclusion let me reiterate, this is an awesome gun. It is deadly accurate. Its throaty growl will certainly gain you some respect and attention at the shooting range. Also keep in mind that Kel-Tec offers a lifetime warranty on his gun. If anything should ever break or wear out all you need to do is pay for the shipping and they will repair it for free. On the down side, the receiver is 100% polymer. I've never been a big fan of polymer guns, but this one's just cool enough that I'll overlook that. The other downside is the cheesy plastic 10 round magazine that comes with this gun, but with all the inexpensive mil-surp magazines out there that hold more ammo, is this really a down-side?

Interesting Mars Findings

Scientist at NASA have used the radar systems on a spacecraft orbiting Mars to measure the amount of water ice trapped at Mars' south pole. Amazingly they've found that if all the water frozen at the pole were thawed, it would produce enough water to cover the entire surface of the planet to a depth of 36 feet! Scientists have long surmised that there was water at the Martian poles, but certainly not in these quantities.
